Clinton reveals 4 minute nuclear time1/14/2024 The mineral-extracting industries also exert great influence, demanding an empire of at least 750 military bases in 80 countries to crush the will of local people who might oppose foreign exploitation of their resources. Manufacturers of big-ticket items require hostile relations with larger nations like Russia and China to justify new sales of aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, F-35 fighter jets, and new generations of nuclear bombs. Bomb makers like Raytheon require zones of active conflict to meet Wall Street’s profit expectations. The most influential business groups directing foreign policy are the US arms manufacturers. Unfortunately, as numerous academic studies have shown – such as the one in 2017 by political scientists Benjamin Page and Martin Gilens – the concerns of “ ordinary Americans little or no impact” on federal government policy, which is directed by economic elites and by organized groups representing business interests. Then on January 20, 2022, as tensions escalated between Russia and Ukraine, and also between the US and China, the clock was reset to 100 seconds from midnight – on “doom’s doorstep.” In 2019, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists kept the Doomsday Clock set to two minutes before midnight after the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. They are concerned about the costs of this war – more than 60 billion taxpayer dollars have already been spent, with much of that money filling the coffers of US arms manufacturers.Īmericans are also concerned about the growing risk of nuclear Armageddon. Both are slated for near-term demolition, according to UCOR.A recent poll conducted by the Quincy Institute found that 57% of American likely voters strongly or somewhat support the US pursuing diplomatic negotiations as soon as possible to end the war in Ukraine, even if it requires Ukraine making compromises with Russia.ĭespite relentless pro-war propaganda, a majority of Americans are not on board with their government’s strategy of pouring endless weapons into Ukraine’s war with its nuclear-armed neighbor and hoping for the best. Crews are continuing deactivation and demolition preparations at the adjacent Low Intensity Test Reactor and Oak Ridge Research Reactor. The Bulk Shielding Reactor was one of more than a dozen research reactors constructed at ORNL over multiple decades and was one of 16 inactive research reactors and isotope facilities EM is addressing at ORNL. In addition to stabilizing the reactor pool, UCOR workers removed asbestos and other waste from the facility. Then the pool area was decontaminated and filled with a concrete mixture to close it. After those tasks, workers drained the 130,000 gallons of the water from the pool and sent it to an onsite treatment facility. One of the most important pre-demolition activities, according to UCOR, involved removing and disposing irradiated components from the reactor pool. EM Oak Ridge crews have safely completed the demolition ahead of schedule, reducing risks at the laboratory and opening land for reuse at the site. The beginning, middle and end: An aerial look at the progress of the teardown of the Bulk Shielding Reactor in the central campus of Oak Ridge National Laboratory from start to finish.
